Colin Cowherd sees one AFC team’s mid-season record as a make-or-break event for the entire franchise.

The veteran talk show host drew his conclusion from one offseason deal, specifically giving this NFL organization a six-week window to show their improvement to stave off potential firings.

On his podcast on Monday, he said the Jets must show significant progress to prevent the team’s owner from writing a final chapter to this era of New York’s history.

Cowherd pinpointed the trade for linebacker Haason Reddick – a 29-year-old pass rusher with Philadelphia last season – as New York’s desperate attempt to make the Aaron Rodgers era a success.

Reddick became expendable in Philadelphia after the Eagles signed former Jets linebacker Bryce Huff to a three-year, $51 million deal this offseason.

Analyst John Middlekauff added that the Jets are in this situation after New York failed to properly evaluate Zach Wilson, proclaiming him as the future franchise quarterback and later doubling-down on their 2021 top draft pick.

Middlekauff furthered Cowherd’s point by making a comparison to the NBA.

Citing the NBA’s relaxed salary cap, Middlekauff explained that the Los Angeles Lakers would sign multiple “old guys” that had been successful in the league to a contract to surround their talented stars.

Yet the NFL’s salary cap prevents football teams from doing the same thing, giving the Jets limited resources and opportunities to sign veterans that can improve New York’s roster.

Due to those limitations, Middlekauff added that everyone in the organization – from top management to the coaching staff – could be fired should New York falter early in the 2024 NFL season.
