MLB free agency is over for the vast majority of teams.

Most of them are already preparing their Opening Day rosters, as their season will officially start on March 28.

However, there are still unsigned stars in the market, most notably starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery.

The talented left-hander was a key cog for the Texas Rangers in their World Series run, but hasn’t been able to get the contract he desires.

Multiple MLB teams have asked about him, but according to insider Jim Bowden, the ones who competed against the Rangers in the Fall Classic can’t be ruled out.

“Don’t sleep on the #Diamondbacks on Jordan Montgomery, and remember that the #Orioles ownership change is official this week…” Bowden tweeted.

The Arizona Diamondbacks needed a top pitcher to join their rotation and help their established one-two punch of Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly.

So they went out and signed Eduardo Rodriguez to a multi-year contract.

E-Rod, however, will start the season on the injured list, so the D-Backs might need another arm.

If they can convince Montgomery, who posted a 3.20 ERA in 188.2 innings between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Rangers, to join, then Rodriguez’s absence wouldn’t be so painful.

The thing with Montgomery is that he probably won’t be ready to join the rotation immediately, having missed the entire spring training because he had no employer.

Players like him usually train on their own and try to stay ready, but it’s not the same.

If signed, he probably would miss at least a couple of weeks of the regular season.

However, and thinking about Arizona’s chances in 2024, having the southpaw would represent a serious upgrade to their rotation and a boost to their World Series chances.
