For the past five seasons, Daniel Jones has been the New York Giants’ starting quarterback, but after showing only modest growth, there has been speculation that they want to move on from him.

They will have the No. 6 pick in April’s draft, which could give them the opportunity to draft University of Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, whose stock seems to be rising.

Per Around The NFL, Giants owner John Mara has given the green light to general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll to draft a QB at No. 6.

“If they fall in love with a quarterback and believe that it’s worth pick No. 6 — or moving up — I certainly would support that,” Mara said, via ESPN.

A year ago, the Giants gave Jones a four-year, $160 million contract extension, but he hasn’t exactly proven that he’s fully worthy of that deal.

He was limited to six games in 2023 due to a torn ACL, and now that they have lost star running back Saquon Barkley in free agency to the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles, a reset may be in order.

Some questioned the wisdom of giving Jones that extension instead of giving it to Barkley, who was their only bona fide threat on offense.

Jones has thrown for no more than 3,205 yards and 24 touchdowns in a single season ever since he was the No. 6 pick in 2019, and no one in their right mind would consider him a top-tier signal-caller.

New York has other needs, including the wide receiver position and improvements to both their offensive and defensive lines, so there are multiple directions they can go in.

No matter what they do with the No. 6 pick in this year’s draft, they could be in for a long and painful road back to respectability.
