Last offseason, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones got a big new contract, but now there is speculation that the team wants to move on from him.

In five NFL seasons, he has shown little, if any, improvement as a passer, and now he is looking to return from a torn ACL that prematurely ended his 2023 season.

LeSean McCoy said on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak” that the Giants are to blame for Jones — in particular, they shouldn’t have taken Jones at No. 6 in the 2019 draft since he went to Duke University.

“I blame the front office of the NY Giants. They should’ve never went to Duke to get a quarterback,” McCoy said.

Duke is a renowned basketball school, but it isn’t really known for producing NFL stars, and Jones wasn’t even impressive during his time there.

His pass accuracy has improved since he came to the pros, but in six games in 2023 before his injury, he managed just two touchdown passes while throwing six interceptions.

New York, after surprisingly making the playoffs the season prior, won just six games and finished with one of the NFL’s worst scoring offenses.

As they did in 2019, they will have the No. 6 pick in this year’s draft, and while they likely won’t be able to take Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels, two of this year’s best QB prospects, they may be able to take a talented wide receiver such as Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze.

Such a player could help Jones be more productive in 2024, especially since New York badly needs a real threat at wide receiver, but at this point, it’s hard to imagine him ever becoming a Pro Bowl-caliber signal-caller.
