The Carolina Panthers and star defender Brian Burns might look to go separate ways.

According to a report by Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, the team has officially stopped extension talks with their star defensive player.

Per her report, the decision to stop talks about a potential long-term deal came at the NFL Scouting Combine last week.

The Panthers have until Tuesday at 4pm ET to place him under the franchise tag, and he could make around $22.8 million if he decided to play under those circumstances.

Then, both parties would have until July 15 to agree on terms of a long-term extension.

The Panthers picked up his fifth-year option in 2023, hoping to make him the cornerstone of their defense for years to come.

Of course, they could also look to trade him after tagging him, but not many teams may have the cap space to sign him long-term.

New head coach Dave Canales will obviously look to revamp their stagnant offense and make the most out of Bryce Young.

Then again, their defense wasn’t bad at all, which is why they cannot afford to let their best defensive player — and one of the best pass rushers in the game — walk away.
